(Sydney, Australia) The Australiangovernment of Prime Minister John Howard has moved to prevent same-sex couplesfrom marrying in countries that recognize gay unions.
The government has instructed its embassies inCanada and in Europe to refuse to provide certificates to people they believeare gay stating that the individuals are single.
"This is a low act by Philip Ruddock anddamages Australia's reputation among the international community", PeterFurness, National Convenor of Australian Marriage Equality said onSaturday.
The Austrian Embassy refused to provide thedocument citing the Attorney-General's notice. Kacukska, an actor, saidthe embassy staff knew he is gay.
Although a copy of the directive was sent to theAustralian High Commission in Canada, that country does not require CNIdocuments although marriage licenses ask marital status.
