» On the feature trail: Film Blog Group Hug (11/3/2005) 1. Sounds like somebodies bit... Review: Jarhead...

1. Sounds like somebodies bitter a movie doesn't reinforce their preconcieved notions. O' well... due remember this movie is actually about the Gulf War, not some allegory that you demand it to be.

I'll be seeing it with my best friend tomorrow... a Marine who spent 6 months in Iraq last year. I don't expect it to be that great, but I don't demand a POV from it.

2. The previous comment is very accurate. This sounds less like a review than a bitching session about how someone didn't get his preconceived notions about the Gulf War (first and second) confirmed via a movie. Which begs the question: What kind of supposed "intellectual" demands to have his biased beliefs backed by a movie? For God's sake, man, if you believe the war is wrong and it's all about oil and "no oil for blood" and "George Bush is a Nazi" and all that good stuff, do yourself a favor and just go protest outside the White House.

3. Too many reviews are pulling in outside elements. I don't watch movies and connect them to real world events. Movies are JUST entertainment. That's ALL they will ever be. I see about 70-80 films a year in the theater and another 200-300 on DVD (i barely watch TV - arrested development and lost). Movies are about creating images and events on screen...they do not reflect the world. Maybe i'm jaded but part of what draws me to Jarhead is that it looks like a beautifully shot, intelligent film with some actors I admire (Gyllenhaal and Sarsgaard). Just dance for me and entertain me. no bigger message needs to be embedded within the film because I don't a flying f**k what some director thinks about war in general. Just do your job and entertain.

4. Ironically, most of the critically acclaimed war(modern day) movies are anti-war. Sadly, it goes with the teritory ...you have to please the Hollywood circles to be recognize. I like how the author threw in his final political jab at the end, imitating his Vietnam war "hero" John Kerry. At least we all know where he is coming from.
