If you answered "D," then you are among the growing number of folks who are no longer surprised when the latest police investigation is spotlighted on a Purple-and-Gold clad member of this state. What boggles the mind is trying to predict the next story line these characters find themselves in every other week or so. That could be a whole new betting game which fans could play, with the profits generated going toward either a new stadium or treatment program.
According to the source in the Star Tribune's Oct. 12 story on the Oct. 6th outing, it appeared the sex acts were between consenting adults, no felony-level crimes were committed, and it is more likely "lewd behavior" misdemeanor charges could be filed later. So how bad could it be, really?
The strange thing is trying to gauge the source of wide-spread derision regarding the Vikings' stag-party like behavior on their "Love Boat." If they would have taken a private charter to the red-light district of Germany, Bangkok or Amsterdam last Thursday and had their little tea party there, would it cause the same amount of disgust? What about if Smoot would have just invited the gang over to his basement, turned on the black lights and slapped on the Barry White (or whatever music you play at sex parties?- I only know about that thump-a-thump-a-thump music which shows up in bad porn from the 1970's)?
The crux was the party was held right here in our pure little state on a somewhat public facility (a rented launch). And the biggest crux was that there was boat staff on board who had no clue what was to befall them that evening, including some staff who were apparently propositioned by the drunken men.
Lines were crossed that night, that's for sure. Whether they were huge, thick marker lines or thin, fine-point lines depends on your sexual moral compass.
So who loses here? Certainly, not the women hired for the party because they made a pile of cash that night. The players involved probably won't lose all that much, either. Even if new owner Zygi Wilf takes a moral stance and boots some or all the miscreants off the team, they will show up somewhere else to play, be it the NFL, Canada or Europe.
Along with the staff who had to be out on those boats for 40 minutes that night, more losers are the owners of Al & Alma's Supper Club & Charter Cruises whose establishment will be forever connected to the wild side of life. Do you really think the Minnetonka Garden Club will be all pumped to take their annual fall cruise on those same ships?
And then there's the parents of young football fans who have to find a way to explain to their kids about things that they don't need to know about until their early teen years.
